Feels Like Home
How many times have you heard the expression "feels like home?" Home is not just a place; it is a feeling, an experience. Safe, warm, inviting, comfortable, a sanctuary, a sacred place that holds your treasures ... memories as well as personal items you hold dear to your heart. "We all need a place in which we can find refuge, reflect, relax and renew," states Chris Madden, author of A Room of Her Own: Women’s Personal Spaces.
Buying a home is one of the most important decisions you will face. And for most people, the largest investment both financially and emotionally. How do you choose your new home? Whether you are considering investing in the purchase of a house or a renting a residence, there are some basic considerations.
First, let’s look at the practical aspects of choosing a home. What are your "wants" and "needs?" Your "needs" are your essential elements such as location, price, and size. "Wants" can be defined as your "desires." Desires have an emotional charge to them, and if one is not careful can adversely influence your decision.
On a piece of paper, make two columns. On one side list all of your "needs" on the other side your "wants." Each member of your household should be allowed some input. Next, prioritize each column. The common goal is to bring you, your family, and your home together in harmony. Harmony can mean, in the truest sense, compromise.
Second, find the right person who can understand your requirements, and represent your best interests. A realtor is a trained professional who is not emotionally invested in the decision. Most often, real estate commissions are paid for by the seller, so buyers obtain the services of a realtor for free! The selling agent represents the seller, so find someone you can trust to represent you.
How do you find your "match?" Look for an agent who can provide you with the following skills:
- Listens and understands your needs
- Can communicate effectively
- Has good negotiation skills
- Is experienced in working with buyers
-
Is familiar with the area in which you wish to look
-
Is familiar with the market for your price range
Once you have found your perfect place, how do you create your sacred space? Chris Casson Madden and Anaheim holistic therapist Lynn Kelly suggest that you use your five senses: visual delights, soothing aromas, relaxing sounds, comforting textures and tastes!
Visual Delights: Decorate with your favorite colors, cherished pieces of art, heirlooms, collectibles, photos, and such.
Soothing Aromas: Scented candles, incense for the indoors, and for outside plant aromatic plants
Relaxing sounds: Play your favorite music, hang wind chimes, or enjoy the soothing sounds of a water fountain
Comforting textures: Silk pillows, furry rugs, carpet, tiles, cozy comforters
Tastes: Keep your favorite drinks and foods on hand
